Literature on Religious Education agrees on one point: During religious education school children should learn to use religious language. However, in religious learning, language acquisition is conceptualized differently. In this article, religious education en-ters into a dialogue with psycholinguistics to understand and to learn about the main aspects of learning language. We show what special kind of contextualization is necessary to foster the development of religious terms’ meaning. We use the word mercy (German: ‚Barmherzigkeit‘) as an example. Based on the findings, didactical ideas are interspersed.
