The article explores religious education research on students’ and teachers’ attitudes and preconceptions as a potential ‘Format of Specialized Didactics Research’. It clarifies the constructs ‘attitudes’ and ‘preconceptions’. Focusing on aims, key topics and methods, the article describes the state of the art of research on both constructs in religious educa-tion and discusses current challenges. Even though some fundamental questions remain to be tackled, the article concludes that religious education research on attitudes and preconceptions holds the potential of a ‘Format of Specialized Didactics Research’.
