On the basis of a quantitative study (n=1090), the attitudes of young Muslims and Christians towards friendship are discussed in an operationalised way via the values considered important by friends. A special feature of this study is the detailed analysis of the religious affiliation in connection with the migration back-ground, namely with regard to three generations (self-immigrant, born in Germany, but parents or grandparent generation immigrated). The individual groups are combined for more precise statements and further sub-groups are considered taking into account the country of origin, the identitary self-location, the educational background and above all inter-ethnic and inter-religious contacts and friendships. Muslim women generally attach greater importance to the fact that their friends are religious and come from the same religion or group of origin. Other shared values in friendships, such as honesty, reliability or shared sports interests do not diverge between Christians and Muslims and are considered equally important. However, the results show that it is not so much the affiliation to Islam, but rather the own educational and migration background as well as a strong religiousness and identitary identification with the religion which are connected with a high emphasis on the importance of the religiousness of friends and rather mono-religious circles of friends.
